No – there is no need to be frightened of giving a speech in English!
Our Online English Speech-Giving Lessons make it easy and fun. In a way, it is “show business”!
Giving a speech does not only mean talking to hundreds or thousands of people.
Do you need to present your ideas at a meeting at work? That is a speech. Giving a toast at a wedding is also a speech. Talking to a trade organization or inspiring players on your children’s soccer team – that is also speech giving.
It is not difficult to learn great public speaking in English. Our Online English Speech-Giving Lessons are a combination of LearnEnglish-NY’s Online English Presentation Skills Training and our Online English Pronunciation Lessons.
In my long career at The New York Times and other publications, I often wrote speeches for celebrities. Even famous people need confidence in giving a speech! I have techniques to train you that I have developed over many years.
COURSE LEVELS AND STRUCTURE
Before you can give your speech, you must write your speech. Our Online English Speech-Giving Lessons begin there. We discuss everything you want to say. We discuss your audience. We discuss the occasion, and the length of the speech.
Speech Structure and Delivery
Structuring a speech is not very different from structuring an essay. (See our Online Essay Writing Lessons.) You list your ideas. Then your decide on an order for those ideas. Then you write sentences to explain your points. What action plan or emotion do you want to give your audience?
What is different from an essay is the timing of your words. How long do you want to spend on each idea? Where should you tell a story, or put in humor? How do you keep the audience interested and not bored? What words so you emphasize?
Giving a speech is a kind of theater. You need to be both yourself and a good actor.
Most importantly, your English pronunciation must be clear, easy to understand, and pleasant to listen to. These are all things you will learn in our Online English Speech-Giving Lessons, and also in our Online English Pronunciation Lessons, Advanced English Lessons Online and Intermediate English Lessons Online.
The secret of giving a good speech is this: Never read it!! It is impossible to pay attention to a speech that someone is reading from a piece of paper.
If you do not read it, how do you remember what to say? Here is the best technique: Write it down word for word, so all the words are there if you need them. But learn your ideas so well that you can say your speech from your thoughts, not from a piece of paper. But have the paper there if you lose your way and you need it. It also helps to use an outline of the speech to remind you to stay on point.
Does this sound difficult? It becomes easy and fun with our Online English Speech Lessons. It is part of your training.
Practice and Feedback
Before a speech, you need to practice. And practice again. And again, again. As you practice, I measure the time. I listen to the quality of your words, your sentences and your pronunciation. Most of all, I listen to your message.
When the day of the speech comes, you will be relaxed and ready!
TESTIMONIAL
“I am very shy, even in my own country, Japan. Before I gave a speech for the Chamber of Commerce, I was very scared. Together, Christopher and I wrote the speech and we practiced many times. He gave me great feedback. When I gave the speech, I really enjoyed it. I had a good time. My audience liked it, too!”
– Akira (Japan)
